Dusk Falls at Ashby, the first book of the Ashby series, is now available to buy. This is the first in what I envisage as a series of six books, running from April 1943, which will cover the Lancaster bomber war and its aftermath.
At the heart of the series are Ned Whitshaw, a Pathfinder navigator, and his cousin Hughes, an RAF Medical Officer. In Dusk Falls at Ashby, the cousins are serving at the fictional RAF Ashby in Cambridgeshire, which is loosely based on RAF Bourn but it could be any other wartime-built Pathfinder station.
The series of events reflects the actual operations which occurred at this period at 97 Squadron at Bourn, including the appalling stretch of bad weather (rather like we’ve had in this June just gone) when on many occasions the Lancasters were grounded. Whilst Dusk is a novel, it is very much one rooted in facts.
